Sewing Machine Bobbins

There seems to be a common belief that sewing machine bobbins are interchangeable between machines. Perhaps this stems from the fact that you can buy them ready-wound?

If bobbins are causing you grief — loose stitches, bird‑nesting or uneven tension — you’re not alone. These are some of the first things we troubleshoot in my Beginners Sewing Classes, where you’ll learn how to wind, insert and adjust your bobbin correctly.

Autumn-Winter sewing classes

My schedule of Autumn-Winter sewing classes is here, covering October and November. These include some more of my popular ‘Essential Skills’ classes, now re-named ‘Beginners’ Sewing Skills’. This covers basic sewing tasks like sewing straight seams and how to finish off the raw edges, taking up hems, making neat machined buttonholes, and inserting zips.

Get to Grips with Zips

One of the most tricky things to do in sewing is putting in zips – but once you get to grips with zips, they’re not that bad. As my Tuesday evening regulars agreed last night, whatever you want to make – a skirt, trousers or dress, you need to put in a zip. Here they are getting to grips with zips. Everyone agreed that they’re not so difficult after all once you know how!

Open Studio event on Saturday

Thanks to all those who came along to the Open Studio event on Saturday.

It was a very popular day and lots of new faces visited Cockenzie House and Gardens to see everything that goes on within. We have artists, furniture upcyclers, glass and jewellery, textile artists, health practitioners and musicians all opening their doors and demonstrating their various skills.
