Beginners Sewing Course

Learn how to use a sewing machine and gain some foundation sewing skills in this 4-part Beginners sewing course.

Course Description

This course will teach you expert sewing techniques whether you want to progress into dressmaking, soft furnishing or craft projects.  You’ll learn how to understand sewing machines, get experience of using different stitch types,  learning about stitch lengths, widths and tensions. I’ll explain what the different presser feet are for and you’ll learn how to measure and cut fabric. This course duration is 8 hours.

I learned to sew as a child and since then, I’ve made every mistake in the book.  So fast-track your sewing journey as you benefit from my mistakes and learn to sew like a pro as I share my expert tips. I wish I’d known all this stuff when I started to sew.

Artisan Stitch won a certificate of Excellence in January 2019 and is rated ‘Best sewing classes in Edinburgh’. The UK Enterprise award for Best Sewing classes followed in 2020.  They also won the Best Private Sewing Education and Tuition award in 2021, and Most outstanding sewing classes 2021/22.

Who is this aimed at?

  • Absolute Beginners (if you’ve never used a sewing machine)
  • Novice sewists (if you’ve just recently learned but would like to know a bit more)
  • Lapsed Sewists (as a refresher if you’ve not sewn for a while and are a bit rusty).

What will I learn?

  • How to use a sewing machine safely and confidently
  • How to wind bobbins and how to thread a sewing machine
  • Understand the mysteries of correct thread tension
  • How to sew perfect straight lines, smooth curves and turn corners
  • Learn three different seam types and when to use them
  • How to take up a hem
  • Make machined buttonholes and how to sew in a zip
  • Make a lovely craft project to gain experience measuring, cutting and sewing fabric.

Choose to make either

  • a lined reversible tote bag,
  • I-pad/tablet cover,
  • or a zipped make-up bag,

If you can’t choose which to make and would like to make all three, then look for ‘Beginners sewing course XL’. It’s a 6-week evening course (total: 12 hours).  This extra practice time makes so much difference to your sewing skills and confidence. Or when you’ve completed the 4 or 6-week class, perhaps you’d like to try your hand at Dressmaking or soft furnishings?

Course arrangements

Sewing machines are provided or you can bring your own if you have one.

You will need to bring your own sewing equipment:  Fabric shears, small embroidery-type scissors for trimming and snipping threads, tape measure (cm), ruler, pins, chalk pencils/fabric marking pens, and of course a notebook and pen.

You get a  choice of easy sewing projects and fabrics are provided. When you book, I’ll send you an e-mail containing a note of what you need to bring, travel and parking directions, and how to find the studio.  Please watch for that e-mail and if you haven’t received it within a few days, check your spam folder.
