Family Sewing Day: Upcycled Denim Aprons
Looking for a creative, planet‑friendly activity you can enjoy together?
Family Sewing Day invites children aged 7+ and their grown‑ups to team up, get hands-on, and turn a pair of old jeans into a personalised denim apron. It’s fun, it’s sustainable, and it’s a brilliant way to learn a new skill side by side.
Please book one place per pair (1 adult + 1 child under 16).
This is a relaxed, beginner‑friendly workshop.
Duration: 10am–3pm (with a break for lunch)
Level: Beginners
Why Families Love This Workshop
Learn Together
No sewing experience needed — you’ll both be guided step‑by‑step as you discover the basics of machine sewing in a safe, supportive environment.
Creative Upcycling
Bring along a pair of old adult-sized jeans and transform them into a functional, stylish apron. It’s a fantastic introduction to reusing textiles and seeing the value in what we already have.
Quality Time That Means Something
Crafting together creates memories that last. Children thrive when an adult is learning alongside them — and it gives you the confidence to support them at home as their sewing journey continues.
What You’ll Make
A durable, practical denim apron created from your upcycled jeans.
All sewing machines and equipment are provided (you’re welcome to bring your own machine if you prefer).I am fully insured and hold a PVG (Disclosure Scotland) certificate.
Spaces are limited to ensure plenty of individual attention.
Why Sewing Is Wonderful for Children
Sewing helps young people to:
-
- build hand–eye coordination
- develop focus and concentration
- strengthen fine motor skills
- spark imagination and creativity
- learn planning and problem‑solving
- experience achievement and pride
- understand sustainability through upcycling
- become resourceful, thoughtful makers
And when children sew with an adult they trust, the benefits multiply. They feel supported, safe, and inspired — and you gain the skills to help them continue at home.
A Note from Jen
I learned to sew at around seven years old on my mum’s old Singer machine, and those evenings spent stitching together are some of my happiest childhood memories. I’d love to help today’s families experience that same sense of connection, creativity, and shared achievement.
This workshop teaches the essential basics — and if you’d like to keep sewing confidently at home, my Beginners Sewing classes for adults are the perfect next step.

Useful Info
If you’re buying a sewing machine for your child, please avoid mini or midi machines — they’re limited and not suitable for developing real skills. Children can safely learn on full‑size machines with supervision.
For expert advice and a wide range of quality machines, Pembertons is my trusted supplier.
Why Upcycle denim?
Denim might be durable, but making a single pair of jeans is surprisingly hard on the planet. Traditional denim production uses huge amounts of water, energy, and chemicals — especially during the washing and finishing stages — making jeans one of the most environmentally damaging garments in the fashion industry. By upcycling old denim instead of buying new, families can reduce waste, save resources, and show children how small creative actions can make a real difference to the environment. It’s a simple, hands‑on way to learn that sustainability starts at home.
