Family Sewing Class

🧵 Family Sewing Class – Learn to Sew together & Make a Handy Tote Bag!

👨‍👧 Looking for a creative activity that brings kids and grown-ups together? Our Family Sewing Workshop is a joyful introduction to machine sewing for beginners – designed especially for children aged 8+ and their grown-up. Whether you’re a total newbie or just a bit rusty, this class will teach you how to use a sewing machine safely and confidently, while making a practical and stylish tote bag from upcycled clothing. ♻️👜

This isn’t just a sewing class – it’s a chance to bond, learn life skills, and discover the joy of making something useful with your own hands. You’ll leave with a finished project, new skills, and a big sense of achievement!

✨ What’s included in the Family Sewing Workshop?

  • 🧵 Learn how to use a sewing machine – safety first, then fun!
  • 📐 Practise sewing straight lines
  • 👜 Make a folding tote bag – perfect for books, shopping, or school kit
  • ♻️ Upcycle old clothes – bring an old shirt (ideally Men’s long-sleeved). This makes 1 bag. If you’d like to make a bag each, then please bring 2 shirts. Alternatively, a couple of pillowslips will also be great.
  • 🧰 All sewing machines and tools provided (or bring your own!)
  • 👩‍🏫 Taught by Jen from Artisan Stitch – Scotland’s award-winning sewing school

🌍 Why upcycling matters

We’ll be using pre-loved clothing to create your tote bag. If you don’t already have anything suitable, please don’t buy new – charity shops are full of treasures waiting to be transformed. This project teaches kids (and adults!) the value of reusing textiles and reducing waste.

👨‍👧‍👦 Who’s it for?

Pairs of one adult and one child (aged 8–16). Please book one place per pair. No sewing experience needed – just a willingness to learn and have fun!

🧠 Why sewing is great for kids

Sewing helps develop hand-eye coordination, focus, creativity, and problem-solving. It’s a brilliant way to build confidence and resilience – and when kids sew alongside a parent or carer, it’s even more rewarding. 💜

🧒 Safety first

Our beginner sewing lessons focus on safe machine use, with plenty of guidance and support. Jen is PVG-certified and fully insured, so you’re in safe hands.

  • 🧵 Workshop Level: Beginner

💜 Why families love it

This workshop is more than just a craft day – it’s a chance to connect, learn, and create something together. You’ll leave with a handmade tote bag, new skills, and memories to treasure.

🔗 Want to keep sewing? 🧒 Our kids’ sewing classes are designed to be fun, creative, and confidence-building – not overly technical. We focus on safe machine use, playful projects, and the joy of making something with your own hands. However, if children are to continue sewing at home, they will need close supervision and support. That’s why we recommend that someone at home has strong sewing and machine knowledge. Our adult sewing courses are the perfect way to build these skills. You’ll learn everything you need to guide your child safely and confidently as they grow in their sewing journey.
