Teens Dressmaking Workshop (12–15): Sew Your Own Wide‑Leg Trousers
A 2‑day garment‑making course for young sewists with basic machine experience
This two‑day Teens’ Dressmaking course gives young makers the chance to create a garment they’ll be proud to wear. Working with a simple commercial pattern, your teen will learn real dressmaking skills — from cutting fabric accurately to achieving a polished, “handmade not homemade” finish.
Duration: 2 days, 10am–4pm Ages: 12–15 Class size: Maximum 5 students
It’s a fun, confidence‑building experience where creativity meets proper technique, taught in a safe, supportive studio environment with close supervision throughout the day (including lunchtime).
Course Description
As a teenage dressmaker myself (admittedly not yesterday!), I know how empowering it feels to make clothes that actually fit and look great. This course gives your child that same experience — but with the calm, structured, step‑by‑step approach I’m known for.
Over two relaxed days, students will learn how to understand a simple pattern and follow clear construction techniques to create a pair of wide‑leg, elastic‑waist trousers. This is a hugely popular, wearable project for teens and a perfect introduction to garment making.
My focus is always on teaching proper dressmaking methods so their finished garment looks professionally made. With only five students in the class, every teen receives individual guidance, encouragement, and hands‑on support.
Please check terms before booking. Once purchased, tickets are non‑refundable.
Who is this aimed at?
For ages 12–15 who already have basic sewing machine experience. This course is about garment construction — not learning to sew from scratch.
Your teen should be able to:
- thread and operate a sewing machine
- sew straight seams and seam allowances
- ideally have completed 1–3 small sewing projects
- understand basic hems and pressing
If you’re unsure whether this is the right level, just ask — I’m happy to advise.
What will your child learn?
Students will be guided step‑by‑step through:
- reading and understanding a simple sewing pattern
- taking basic measurements
- choosing the correct size
- cutting fabric safely and accurately
- sewing seams and pressing for a clean finish
- creating an elastic waistband
- adjusting fit
- optional pockets
- troubleshooting common sewing issues
By the end of the course, they’ll have a finished pair of trousers and the confidence to continue dressmaking at home.
Course Arrangements
A small class size of five students ensures plenty of individual attention. Each teen works on their own project, and tuition is tailored to their needs.
Students need to bring:
- their chosen fabric (guidance provided on booking)
- matching thread
- elastic for the waistband
- a basic sewing kit: fabric shears, paper scissors, small embroidery scissors, tape measure (cm), chalk pencils/fabric markers, pins
Sewing machines: Studio machines are available, but students may bring their own. Please remember the power cable/foot control, bobbins, and instruction manual.
